Key Responsibilities of the MHPSS Counselor
The selected candidate will provide Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) to children, adolescents, adults, and vulnerable populations affected by conflict, displacement, poverty, trauma, and other psychosocial challenges.
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions.
- Provide Psychological First Aid (PFA) and emotional support.
- Perform psychosocial assessments using standard tools.
- Maintain confidential client records and case files.
- Deliver psychosocial support interventions according to international standards.
- Follow Tdh MHPSS guidelines and IASC recommendations.
Referral and Case Management
- Identify clients requiring specialized support.
- Coordinate referrals to health, protection, and social service providers.
- Strengthen referral pathways within communities.
Community Outreach and Awareness
- Conduct awareness sessions on mental health and stress management.
- Promote positive coping mechanisms and psychosocial well-being.
- Reduce stigma associated with mental health issues.
- Facilitate community mobilization activities.
- Support capacity-building initiatives and training programs.
Reporting and Coordination
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly activity reports.
- Document counseling services, referrals, and outreach activities.
- Coordinate closely with supervisors and project teams.
Required Qualifications
Education
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following fields:
- Psychology
- Social Work
- Counseling
- Mental Health
- Related Social Sciences
Experience
Applicants should have:
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in psychosocial support, counseling, or mental health services.
- Experience working with NGOs, INGOs, hospitals, BPHS/EPHS facilities, or humanitarian organizations.
- Knowledge of Psychological First Aid (PFA).
- Understanding of child protection principles and safeguarding standards.
- Experience with case management and referral systems.
- Familiarity with GBV referral pathways and survivor-centered approaches.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in local Afghan languages (spoken and written).
Computer Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
